On Starter/Hobby the database is embedded in the same box as the app (no separate charge — the most economical route for small and medium sites); pick Pro/Enterprise and it moves automatically to a managed MySQL cluster (3× high availability, replicated). Setup only asks you for a site name and an admin account — the database is attached for you. Data lives on the persistent disk, and with Cloud Backup on, site and database are backed up together.
